Collecting Magic:

A Personal Essay

So here's how it goes:

It all started my freshman year when I made an ethnography film project about materal culture and Harry Potter for an athropology class, called "Collecting Magic." My passion for Harry Potter, and interest its effect on society, has since morphed into a four-part HP themed collection of work devoted to exploring the material and digital lives of the fandom.

The Fandom Diaries

A short ethnography where I interview Harry Potter fans about the HP objects they own and what these objects mean to them.

An essay written for English 325 investigating why Harry Potter fans choose to collect often expensive and generally useless items through the lens of my own personal experiences.

To Repurpose: To take an old piece of work and repurpose it for a new audience.

So, I repurposed "Collecting Magic," deciding to focus on digital rather than material culture.

The result is a magazine article written in the style of Vanity Fair discussing the so-called "death" of the Harry Potter fandom, fandoms on the internet, and whether or not internet will keep the HP fandom alive.

To remediate: To redesign for a new type of media.

So, I took "The Fandom That Lived," and made it into a personal experience.

The result is a three episode web series in video diary style documenting my own foray into the terrifying world of internet fandom.
